Vigil by Robert Masello ☻☻☻☻☺ Review by Don Miller Setting: Modern day New York City and Italy
When a honeymooning couple swims into a secluded cave in Italy, they discover a frightening looking fossil that resembles a clawed creature. The new bride swims out of the cave to safety but mysteriously her husband drowns before he can escape. The Italian authorities are alerted and they excavate a huge slab of rock with the fossil enclosed. Joe Russo, an archeologist in Rome, inherits the task of evaluating what it is and how old the fossil is. The results are shocking. The creature is millions of years older that anyone thought possible. Mystified, he contacts his friend and colleague Carter Cox, an archeologist in New York. Cox has more sophisticated equipment in New York so the decision is made to transfer the fossil to the States. Inadvertently they release a horrible force of evil and power upon the world. Enter Ezra Metzger, who is studying an ancient parchment scroll he smuggled out of Israel. The scroll may be important in understanding the fossil and the force it contains. This is a light and fast paced novel that is different and intriguing. Ancient religion, adventure, murder and mystery, all combined to make this an exciting and enjoyable book.
