Enjoy Interesting Flora and Lots of Birds at Palmetto State Park
By Don Miller

One of the most unique, least visited and picturesque state parks is located about one hour east of San Antonio just south of Interstate 10 between Luling and Gonzales.  Palmetto State Park covers 269 acres but offers a vast array of activities.

In contrast to the gently rolling hills that comprise this area of Texas, Palmetto is located in the Ottine Swamp which gives it a tropical appearance.  The San Marcos River runs through the park providing nourishment along with underground water and periodic flooding.  The most notable foliage is the dwarf palmetto which typically grows farther east, in wetter climates.

There are four short hiking trails in the park, the 1/3 mile Palmetto Trail, the 2/3 mile River Trail, the 2/3 mile Lake Trail and a 1 1/4 mile hiking trail.  The trails are canopied with trees covered with Spanish Moss and the ground is covered with dwarf palmettos.  Brochures are available that describe the plant life and although the trails are much shorter than other parks, we found them so informative we needed an afternoon to enjoy them.  Lovers of wildlife will appreciate the fact that 240 species of birds visit the park.

Several campsites seemed particularly well designed as far as shade, size, parking and tent location.  Other activities include a children's playground, lake, swimming and fishing in the San Marcos River and picnicking.

Palmetto State Park may not pack the punch of some state parks as far as boating on beautiful lakes or waterfalls.  On the other hand, if you want a beautiful different setting for your family, peace and quiet, unusual plants and trails, Palmetto may provide you with the ideal weekend retreat.
