Part One: The Purpose Live Life travel, as in Living Life, must have a PURPOSE to be successful. Determining a purpose should not be a major task, and can be as simple as “I want to visit the Eiffel Tower” or as complicated as searching out your family origin. Regardless of the complexity of your purpose, it is important to take some time to evaluate what you would like to accomplish during your travels. If for example, you wish to visit a particular site, spend a few minutes researching the history and reason the site is important to you. Write down the highlights so you can share the details with your traveling companions once you arrive at your destination. Pay attention to the little unknown facts. While doing the research you will undoubtedly discover other related points of interest. Incorporating these points of interest in your travel plans will enhance your live life experience. Often the purpose relates to how you wish to spend that very valuable “vacation time”, the time away from work and all the mundane demands of every day living. It is extremely important to determine whether the purpose of your trip is to sit and do nothing or fill your vacation days with as much activity as possible. Nothing is more damaging to one’s travel than thinking you will be spending time relaxing on the beach, away from phones and computers, and finding out your traveling companions have you scheduled on a tour bus at 6:00 am heading for a hike to Macchu Picchu. Again, take time to write down how you would like to spend each day. Remember that the first day should include adjustment time. If you are traveling a long distance and will encounter the Jet Lag phenomenon, plan an explore (as Winnie the Pooh would say), or similar activity when you arrive at your destination that will keep you awake until it is time to go to bed. In addition, relaxing and reading are wonderful activities but you may find you are bored after a day of sitting. Again, research other activities that would be available if you find yourself “completely rested” by your second day. The final consideration in determining your purpose is consideration of the weather. One has no control over this one factor. Allow your purpose to be flexible enough to include minor changes if Mother Nature intervenes!
